Experimental collection of films made in late 1960’s using a computer has surprising digital and glitch aesthetic - video embedded below:

[PK Note - I’m not going to lie, the film isn’t going to be for everyone, and it does feature some abstract jazz which may hurt your ears if you are listening via headphone. As you’ll see in the excerpt below, a computer was used to create the composition but not the colours, which was added later. Still, I do see it as a possible precursor to glitch we are more familiar with today]

From 1964 through around 1969, artist Stan VanDerBeek worked with computer scientist Ken Knowlton on a series of films:

… Each film was constructed using Knowlton’s BEFLIX computer language, which was based on FORTRAN. The films were programmed on a IBM 7094 computer. The films were created in black and white, with color added later by Brown and Olvey. This particular version is taken from a film with some color decay.

VanDerBeek passed away in 1984. He is also part of the film Incredible Machine, made in 1968. VanDerBeek was part of a unique program at Bell Labs that allowed artists to work with computer scientists in order to explore and advance the technology in the fields of computer graphics and music.

Originally installed behind the artist’s home in Stony Point, NY, VanDerBeek’s Movie Drome is made up of a continuous stream of projected moving images that revolve, merge, and disperse within a partially enclosed silo roof. Recently exhibited this summer at the New Museum, the piece is heralded as a harbinger of many techniques used in new media, representative of a proto-digital approach to the immersive media environment.

Patty narrates a story about the plate, which is made in honor of her aunt who had died. As she speaks, she slices through left sided and over-sized bra, which later becomes halved melon. The artist tied melon in front of her body as breast. She then gradually scoop out the melon with her hand and piles the seeds onto a plate balanced on her head. By eating the melon, she tells us the story of her aunt who died of breast cancer.

Patty Chang - In Love (2001)

Chang examines the territory of the primal, parental connection in her work in this dual-channel video, two separate scenes of the artist with a parent are juxtaposed. Chang faces her mother and, in the adjacent frame, appears face–to–face with her father. Simultaneously both images show the artist’s and respective parent’s faces pressed together in what at first appears to be a deep kiss. Gradually it becomes evident that the video is running in reverse time, and that they share not a kiss but rather an onion from which they both eat. They bite into it slowly, pausing as they take turns offering it to each other, as if it suggests the proverbial, forbidden fruit. Parent and child swallow before they take additional bites, blinking hard to hold back tears from the onion’s sharpness and pungency. However, in the video’s reversal of time, the onion is reconstituted and the tears disappear—wholeness is thus regained.

Patty Chang’s video Untitled (Eels) is an unsettling endurance performance. When the video begins, Chang, who wears a partially wet shirt and a short pleated skirt, sits quietly. Soon, it becomes apparent that the blouse’s moisture originates from eels that slither below. As the video progresses, Chang sometimes appears to be in pain and at other times in a sexually aroused state. Her youthful, vulnerable appearance accentuates the strange intensity of her discomfort and/or titillation. Like most of Chang’s work, this 16-minute, real-time performance points to her affinity for endurance and body art.
